Medtronic Moves Forward with Planned Spin-off of Diabetes Business 'MiniMed'

In May 2025, Medtronic announced plans to spin off its diabetes business into an independent publicly traded company, to be named MiniMed. This decision was driven by several factors, including perceived growth challenges within the division and a desire to create a more agile entity capable of accelerating product iteration and focusing intensely on the competitive diabetes market5.

A primary reason for the separation is the fundamental difference in business models between the diabetes unit and Medtronic's core operations. The diabetes business, which develops automated insulin pumps, smart insulin pens, and continuous glucose monitors (CGM), operates primarily on a B2C (business-to-consumer) model. This contrasts sharply with the B2B (business-to-enterprise) model of Medtronic's traditional cardiovascular, neurosurgery, and medical-surgical businesses, which rely on hospital procurement and operations. The differing models led to increased operational costs for the diabetes unit, requiring independent supply chain management and sales channel development5. The spin-off is expected to be completed following necessary regulatory approvals.
